INSTRUCTOR BIO
Katie Doss graduated from Knox County R-I High School in Edina, MO. After high school, she attended Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IA, where she received her Associates Degree in Nursing. She began teaching at KATC as a nursing careers instructor in 2013 and has taught a wide variety of nursing and health curriculum. Ms. Doss completed her Bachelors in Occupational Education with University of Central MO in 2018 and is currently working towards her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with Western Governor's University.  

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Allied Health/Biomedical classes are for those students who are interested in becoming employed in a nursing-related career.  Each course is one semester in length and are offered to HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS only. Students will learn how to interact with patients and become more informed of the nature of the healthcare field. 

​COURSES OFFERED 

CCMA 1- (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant)
Credit: 1.0     Grade Level 11-12     

Prerequisite: Med Term 1/2 or Anatomy & Physiology with a 70% per semester. It takes a strong team to offer top-notch patient care, and each team member plays an integral role. Are you a team player interested in coordinating patient care? Then a career as a medical assistant may be right for you! In this course, you will acquire medical terminology, investigate anatomy and physiology, learn keys to professionalism in an office setting and explore office roles. Acquire foundational knowledge required to pursue a career in the healthcare industry and the education, training and credentials needed to attain them. Learn basic medical terminology, principles of anatomy and physiology, and legal and ethical responsibilities. Explore communication, teamwork, and leadership techniques – providing a solid basis for those wanting to advance through the health sciences. You’ll begin analyzing your responsibilities for ensuring patient and personal safety with special attention paid to emergency procedures. Examine infection control, first-aid, CPR and measuring a patient’s vitals. Learn about numerical data, such as systems of measurement, medical math and reading and interpreting charts. And examine effective teamwork and leadership characteristics while building your employment skills. Explore theories behind health care and current practices. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certification for Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). 

CCMA 2- (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant)

Credit: 1.0      Grade Level 11-12      Prerequisite: CCMA 1, Med Term 1 & 2 with a minimum of 70% per semester. It’s time to grab your latex gloves and snap them back into place so you can get a deeper look into the world of medical assisting! In this course, you’ll explore patient care and procedures, testing and care coordination, pharmacology and safety, and reimbursement and the law. You will complete the hands-on skills necessary to perform venipunctures, urine samples, heel sticks, and much more.  Learn to apply electrodes for an EKG and read results accordingly.  This class is designed for those who want to pursue their Certified Clinical Medical Assistant National exam, Phlebotomy National Certification or EKG National Certification.  

Medical Terminology 1

Credit: 1.0 Grade Level: 9-12

This course focuses on the many components of medical terminology relating to the human body systems. Emphasis is placed on spelling, definition and usage of medical terms. This course is very helpful for those interested in a medical profession and highly recommended prior to Anatomy & Physiology. This course will give you a solid foundation to understanding the body and everyday medical encounters. 


Medical Terminology 2

Credit: 1.0     Grade Level: 10-12     Prerequisite:Medical Terminology 1 or currently taking with a minimum semester score of 70%. This course focuses on the many components of medical terminology relating to the human body systems.  Whether you plan on going into medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy, you’ll need to learn the effects of medicines on different biological systems, appropriate dosages and how the body responds to different medications. We will continue to learn medical terminology as we link more information to medical terminology 1 and delve deeper into diseases and conditions as they relate to each system. You will learn about available medications for specific diseases, the way therapeutics work in the body, different drug classifications and the law behind administering drugs.  You will connect the body systems to disease, infections, etc and determine how to treat them accordingly, truly understanding common ailments to the general population. 

Sports Emergency Medicine

Credit: 1.0     Grade Level 11-12     Prerequisite: Medical Terminology 1 & 2 with a minimum of 70% per semester. Emergency care for athletes and legal obligations. Discover what nutrition, healthy lifestyle and fitness truly mean, and dive into anatomy, human biomechanics, and exercise modalities. You’ll expand your understanding of the human body to provide a greater context for injury in a variety of scenarios. You’ll learn how to evaluate an injury, onsite tests to perform and when to refer a patient to a medical professional. You’ll explore the anatomy of specific body areas to better understand injuries that may occur as well as ways to prevent injury. You’ll also learn basic life support, become CPR certified and OSHA 10 healthcare certified.
